ATPS Joins partners to sensitize parliamentarians on climate change

The ATPS collaborated with several key local and international partners to sensitize Kenyan Parliamentarians on Climate Change. The partners include the Ministry of Environment, UNEP, Climate Change Adaptation Network and IGAD Climate Prediction Applications Centre.

The emerging global development challenges such as increased degradation of land and forest ecosystems, biodiversity loss, variable rainfall patterns and poor air quality, continue to undermine the provision of vital basic ecosystem services on which many Kenyans depend.

The sensitization workshop took place at the Mombasa Continental Hotel on the eighth and ninth of October 2009. Among those present at the event were Hon. John Michuki, Minister for Environment and Mineral resources, Hon. Kenneth Marende, Speaker of the National Assembly and Dr. Achim Steiner, Executive Director, UNEP among other leaders.

The workshop came at a time when public debate rages over the settlement of people in the Mau Forest and other key water catchments in the country. The meeting sensitizeD the leaders on the key issues at stake for Kenya as the government prepared to send a delegation to the 15th Global Conference on Climate Change in Copenhagen, Denmark,. The meeting also discussed Kenya’s position at Copenhagen.
